I photographed some of my craft supplies the other day and it crossed my mind that I hadn’t used my washi tape in awhile. The problem is that when I searched on Google or Pinterest for washi tape DIYs, more of the same projects that I’ve seen ever since this fun stuff first blew up (thank you, Etsy), back in, what? 2011? I feel like everyone on the internet has tried them all. Luckily after searching more I found quite a lot of wonderful things to do with washi tape and the best part is that all these projects are from 2015 and most within the last month or two. So *finally* if you have a little collection to use up, you can get to crafting something new.
PS: After getting inspired by these links, I worked on my own DIY felt banner–how-to-below.
• I love the idea of repurposing hand lettered washi tape for labels or letters.
• Organize and decorate your studio space with a washi tape calendar. I need to do something like this since I’m so visual!
• Subtle, pretty geometric wall art that doesn’t look at all “crafty”.
• or you can add some color to already-displayed frames with neon washi tape.
• Yep, even a clock can be amped up with tape! Try this DIY washi tape clock with your spare stash.
• You could also decorate your chapstick with washi tape, and while you’re there, why not make the chapstick too?
• I like the idea of turning the tape into arrow wall decals for a large-scale art piece. Also, this tutorial is so detailed it’s amazing!
• This phone charger life hack made with tape is almost too clever it’s silly.
• I personally love bookmarks but um, nobody buys that stuff anymore. Time to DIY washi tape bookmarks for all your creative reads.
• Then again, you could just make your own watercolor washi tape to do any of these crafts.
DIY Washi Tape Felt Banner
Wanting to make something with felt + washi tape (all my rolls have not so much left), I came up with this idea. It’s similar to my craft room banner but I liked this combination of floral + turquoise better.
1. Gather materials: 1 sheet of felt, scissors, hot glue + gun, washi tape, string, and a dowel or straw (yep, I used a straw to hang the string from.)
2. Cut felt down to size. I cut it into a banner shape. I also trimmed off one of the edges so that it would be straw-length wide.
3. Create the design around the border with one type of tape.
4. Cut your second tape into letters. I cut strips of tape into thirds and trimmed accordingly.
5. Use hot glue to adhere any ends popping up. I’ve made the mistake in the past of buying very cheap tape at discount stores and it sure doesn’t stick like other tape.
6. Cut a slit in each and and string your string through the straw and around the back of the felt. You can keep the straw showing but I didn’t want it to be super obvious that’s what I was using (I just didn’t have any more craft sticks.)
7. Tie off the string and display!
Do you still have a washi tape stash?

Love this project!! This reminded me that I have so much pretty felt I need to do something with. Also just found a bunch of washi tape in CA at my mom’s house last night! I’ll probably be trying something like this. 🙂
