20 things to write about in June

June 8, 2015 by Angela

This month my intention is to read more and write better. To get in the swing of things, I’ve been doing free writes off of online prompts. Seeking out inspiring prompts can take hours though. And when I came up with spring blogging ideas, I realized that I can actually dream them up quite quickly, it’s just that when I’m stuck I always feel like I need external help to get started. Having this to refer to will be nice for me, and hopefully anyone else who wants to write this month too.

The other reason I was motivated to brainstorm writing prompts is because June is a month full of change. Three years ago this month I graduated college (*what?*) and two years I moved 1200 miles down the west coast. And after reading the memoir-themed edition of the latest Creative Nonfiction, I’m finding new ways to connect the memories of those changes to how they influence me presently. I know I’m not alone in collecting milestones for the month of June, so here are 20 writing prompts loosely based around that theme, either for your journal, blog, essays, or future memoirs…

one. Think about the month of June growing up–the end of the school year, the changes in the weather, etc.–and write a description of what you remember feeling during these moments. Focus on senses rather than concrete experiences.

two. Log all the milestones you remember taking place in the month of June, no matter how big or small. Write a short description of each so you have a list to go off of later on. You can also do this for another person in your life–your child, partner, parents, etc.

three. At different times during the month, go back and choose one of the previously logged milestones to write about. Consider its importance and how life would be different had it not happened at all.

four. Choose a photo that you know was taken in June/summer. If you remember the setting, make up a scene that’s different from how you/the subject experienced it in the photo. If you don’t know or remember it, create a story from what you imagine.

five. Describe the month of June (to you personally) in four words. Is this how you would describe July and August, too? Why or why not?

six. It’s easy to write about summer with a sense of nostalgia. Write about a June experience from a different angle, whether that means choosing a feeling other than longing or changing the tense.

seven. Write about a favorite summer treat or meal. Focus on creating an experience for the reader rather than just describing the food.

eight. The pool, the lake, or the ocean? Why?

nine. Write about June from the perspective of another person, such as someone still in school if you aren’t or someone in a different part of the world than you.

ten. What do you remember about the end of the school year as a child? Signing yearbooks, going on field trips? Try to recall things you haven’t thought about in years.

eleven. Recall the last day of the school year in a class you dreaded. Then write about the last day from your teacher’s perspective.

twelve. Describe your ideal early summer night.

thirteen. Do you have any negative memories associated with this month? Spend 15 minutes unearthing any negative feelings.

fourteen. Make note of a quintessential summer experience you didn’t have as a kid. It might be easy; you might have to dig deep. Now that you’re older, do you still feel you missed out?

fifteen. If your summer bucket list consisted of only three things, what would they be? Now is the time to figure out how you’re going to make it happen!

sixteen. Write a graduation story in under 500 words, whether it’s yours, someone you know, or fiction.

seventeen. Choose another summer-related photo. Describe everything in the background of the photo, basing none of your story on the subjects.

eighteen. Imagine you’re planning a gathering to celebrate June. Write about what needs to be done to make this a great party–the theme, the food, the guest list. Afterward, if you’re not planning on putting it into action, write about why. If you are, now you know what to do!

nineteen. What summer activity do you dislike? Is there anything summer related you’re just not into?

twenty. Describe the local weather in June. What is this the perfect time of year for?

Hope you get some use out of these prompts this month, whether or not you decide to blog them.

Society 6 throw pillows

June 3, 2015 by Angela

I’m not proud of how long I’ve spent on Society6.com looking for home decor. Personally, I think not a lot of art translates well to a duvet, throw, or rug. Society6 can also be quite overwhelming to search on, so looking for practical wares among thousands of designs goes from relaxing to “can this be over?” REAL quickly. Hoping anyone else on the hunt for home decor + the perfect art will find this roundup and be one step closer to the perfect hybrid art-and-ware piece.

I think I pretty much covered my (often contradictory) aesthetic here: pastels, oil paint, modern, donuts + coffee in honor of national donut day, tropical plants, celestial-inspired, calligraphy, west coast pride, watercolor… Can you see any of these in your space?

Los Angeles at sunset + announcements

June 2, 2015 by Angela

Los Angeles Sunset | iffoundmake.com

There are vantage points all over Los Angeles so whenever I have out of town visitors I always make sure to show them around. I’ve written about the Griffith Observatory before and it’s always a nice low-key thing to do, especially at sunset. Not only can you see basically all of the LA sprawl, but several different hiking points around Griffith Park + the Hollywood sign. The roads leading up to the observatory also run through such a pleasant, peaceful Los Feliz neighborhood that walking at least part of the way up is a must. A few photos from this haziest of evenings…

Now I’m back to working from local cafes + planning my many calendars for June. Ahead on some things, very very behind on others. One reason I redesigned the blog and started afresh is because I felt I needed a jumping off point for all the plans I had. Many of those haven’t really been put in place yet in six months of posting. So with the year at a halfway point, I wanted to share my plans. I’ve still been writing about LA adventures and DIY projects, but there are a few other topics on my mind. On The Blog Market, I write about blogging and shop-owning, and as a freelance editor, I do a lot of social media. And as a freelance blogger, I write on pretty much every lifestyle topic under the sun. But here, I have the chance to be 100% in control, meaning that I can write a post on anything that interests me. I’ve been wanting to share more about living on a small scale–shopping small, highlighting artists, showing that you can actually avoid a lot of the unethical consumerism that seems hard to leave behind, in favor of a more handmade, conscious life. In small ways I am doing this myself, but it can be frustrating at times because it is by no means taking the easy way out. So that’s one thing that I want to become a bigger topic.

To kick this off in June, I’m going to de-clutter my mind a bit and finally share a handful of the amazing resources I’ve been happening across, mostly on Instagram, including shops of all kinds, online destinations, and artists that not only provide great alternatives to a lot of the other shopping posts you see on lifestyle blogs, but offer great inspiration for your own creative life. I’ll also be adding to my list of ethical home decor shops and seeking out more to share. Hope you’re on board with this evolution, and here’s to hoping this post will keep me accountable! Happy June.

Flower friday: Peony season

May 29, 2015 by Angela

peony season | iffoundmake.com

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know that I’ve been obsessing over my first bundle of peonies this season. This is the one flower that not only puts a smile on my face but always amazes me when I walk into the room. Their blooms are that dramatic.

Pretty pretty. But the morning after I took these photos, they were even larger…

Just one left behind. I don’t think that little stem got enough water. Hoping to have more of a study to share on next week’s flowers: details and inspiration.

Summer beach essentials

May 27, 2015 by Angela

I’ve yet to spend much time lounging on the beach this year (save for a few crazy beautiful January days), and actually May was quite mild around Los Angeles. But with whale watching and friends visiting, I’ve got beach on the brain. I recently ordered a cute swimsuit I’ve been eyeing for actual years off of Etsy, so now all I need are a few other accessories. Bright nails, a cozy towel, and new sandals should do the trick. After trying on some hats at the mall over the weekend (and all of them being big and swallowing me up), I decided to rekindle my love of headbands. And that Madewell tote everyone’s sporting that was definitely not ethically made? There’s a much better (in my humble opinion) version over at fashionABLE for close to the same price. So go ahead and scoop that up.

Isn’t that pouch beautiful?

PS: Pop over to The Blog Market for a less summery, more cozy roundup of studio must haves.

Found: whales off of Marina del Rey

May 26, 2015 by Angela

manhattan beach | iffoundmake.com

Weeks ago I found a whale watching deal on living social and have been eager to book a trip ever since. It actually expired so we found one on groupon for Marina del Rey and it did not disappoint! $35 for two people and a three hour trip was well worth it. We saw hundreds and hundreds of common dolphins (their pods can be in the 1000s) and a few humpback whales, and I did not want to go back in. I love the ocean and being out at sea was just constant joy for me. While other people sat and relaxed, I scanned the horizon for diving birds (a sure sign of activity). Once the dolphins spotted us they stayed by the boat for over an hour. As for the whales, I’d seen them from shore a few times (one of my fave reasons to head to the beach in California), but we did get to get closer (though we kept our distance) and see a few at once. These photos aren’t super amazing but keep the bright sun and rocky boat in mind…

Afterward we went down to my favorite spot, Manhattan Beach, for dinner and sunset watching. That also, did not disappoint. Kevin joked that I’m going to be like ‘that’ guy on our tour who kept spouting off (no pun intended!) fun facts about whales the entire time. Clearly a pro. I’m definitely going back. Our Memorial Day adventure was a win.
