Red & gold gift wrap ideas

December 9, 2014 by Angela

DIY Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas | if found, make.
People have certain decorating traditions from year to year: fake tree vs. real, red and green vs. blue and white, a little pink or no pink, handcrafted or not, traditional or modern, quirky or trendy. Holidays have changed a lot over the years for my family and me, and my aesthetic for decorating has never quite stayed the same. Sometimes I want to grab a white tree and break out my coveted collection of vintage aqua + pink bulbs (which I haven’t done yet, for fear the cats would make them their play things). Sometimes I want to go to a real tree farm, which I’ve never done either. I like to think I’ll try any and all. Same goes for gift wrapping. On this particular day I was feeling the traditional look of red + gold as paired with some of today’s cutest trends, like polka dots, chevron, and glitter…

Chevron & Polka Dot Bags: Gift shop in Larchmont Village | Ribbon: Scrap pieces from Pulp, Los Angeles | Glitter mats: Michael’s | Bells & clothespins: My stash | Boxes & gift wrap: Recycled

Sunday I had a little holiday craft session. I’d shopped LA on Small Business Saturday and the weekend after, but in the end, I wrapped my gifts using mostly pieces from my collection. Small gifts can be the best gifts: jewelry, tickets, a handwritten letter, goold ‘ol cash. There’s no doubt about that. My mother always insisted on wrapping every single little thing in our stockings, which were full of dollar-store accessories and travel sized goodies. She knew if you had to unwrap everything, you’d enjoy the moment a lot longer. Why not make the outside just as exciting as the inside?

For small, special gifts:
  •  Try a cute paper bag instead of a box, and close it with washi tape and ribbon.
  • Double up on different types of ribbon.
  • Glitter never disappoints.
  • Sneak a little somethin’ extra onto the ribbon, like an accessory or decoration.
  • Always handcraft your tag.

Gift Guide: Ethical Fashion

December 7, 2014 by Angela

Fashion Ethical Guide | if found, make.

The White Ribbon Handmade Leather Ballet Flats $98 | Amour Vert Riley Jacket $113 | Erin Considine Ellipse Cuff Brass $165 | Coziest Wrap Scarf from Gift Shop Brooklyn $74 | LEIF Metallic Pouch $45 | Della Poppy Travel Bag $24 | ChiChiDee Skinny Tie Up Headscarf $15

We’re finally getting to a place where handmade and artisan fashion is becoming more mainstream and that means more affordable. When looking at a price tag, it seems people rarely consider the materials, costs, and most importantly, work, that went into creating a piece, so yes, prices can seem unreasonably expensive. Everyone is looking for a rate that’s only realistic when compared to mass-produced, lower quality products. I’m excited to see makers and designers turning their passion into a product that others can choose over the alternative, and get a lot more out of.

This ethical fashion gift guide has is a jumping off point for anyone who has a fashion-forward, modern girl on the list, and it hits a lot of price points. I imagine the cozy scarf, moto jacket, or ballet flats for your sister or best friend, the cuff as a more personal gift for a jewelry lover, and the bags for friends, coworkers, or stocking stuffers. The headbands are so cozy and cute, you can get away with a one-for-me-one-for-you type of situation!

Renegade LA + the Echo Park Craft Fair are next weekend, so I’m hoping to find something special there.

How is your gifting going this year?

Do you need a creative space to work well?

December 5, 2014 by Angela

Do you need a creative space to work well?

From creating a tranquil space out of Ikea furniture in my childhood bedroom after moving home from college to going from loving to loathing my LA apartment after the transition from office jobs to work-at-home, I’ve always tried to work my way around environmental circumstances beyond my control. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent scouring Craigslist hoping to even come across a dream creative studio—no matter that I’d never be able to afford one—or the time logged on Pinterest searching terms like “exposed brick” and “light space”, “white walls”, etc.

10 Etsy Accounts to Follow

December 5, 2014 by Angela

Items I Love by Angela on Etsy
Image: my current favorites

When Etsy first introduced circles/following, I didn’t see how the site could play a role in social media in the way that Pinterest or Facebook does. But one day I started bouncing around to other users’ favorites lists, and found that it’s, for me, a much easier and more fun way to shop or collect items for treasuries (RIP!) and blog posts. Now, when I want to go shopping on Etsy, I first scroll through my ‘home feed’ (though I wish my home feed were still the FP, but that’s for a different day), and find something I like. Then, I check out the product and who has favorited it, and find people to follow from there. There you have it: A simple way to find and follow and see new things in your style. In honor of this lovely way of discovering handmade + vintage, here are my fave Etsy accounts to follow right now:

1. Robyn of Twitch Vintage for vintage fashion + modern decor.
2. BitsofEnvy for all things vintage-rustic.
3. Catador for colorful, modern handmade.
4. Alittletulip for dusty pastel finds, vintage decor, and neutral colors.
5. AlternativeJournals for charming, quirky gift ideas.
6. Encave for trending pieces and midcentury modern flair.
7. alphonnsine for all things pink, black, and white.
8. Driftlesspaperco for earthy-modern decor and gifts.
9. ediot for fashion and accessories with all sorts of prints, patterns, and pops of color.
10. Misty801 for handmade gifts in all the prettiest pastels.

Follow me here.

Hopefully this will help direct some holiday season shopping!

PS: My bloglovin’ is currently having issues updating, so my recent posts aren’t showing up in my followers’ feeds. Working on it, but in the mean time, check out my posts you may have missed on the home page.

Fall in the Northwest

December 3, 2014 by Angela

Fall Fashion // http://iffoundmake.com
Early last month I spent a week at my dad’s house in Washington. I loved being home. I saw all my friends, instagrammed lots of fall leaves, and had lattes at each of my favorite cafes. I visited the Moorea Seal store, caught up with my old roommates, and celebrated an early Thanksgiving with my family, turkey and all. It’s raining here in Los Angeles now, but it was bright and clear at home. And cold.

I haven’t quite needed to take these scarves out on the LA streets since I’ve been home, but I was buried in winter layers last month. this was me baaasically everyday: a blanket scarf, ankle boots, and just a little bit top heavy…

New design + updates

December 2, 2014 by Angela

December is an exciting month for many reasons, but for me relaunching my blog is is number one. It’s difficult for anyone to make blogging a priority when they have full workloads and so much else happening outside the browser window. For me, I blog all day long for work too, so it’s easy to unconsciously put everything in the same pile and lose perspective. Anyway, it seems I always choose to go for it at terribly inconvenient times, so here I am posting during my busiest month of all!

if found, make. blog

Bare with me while I work out all the kinks, namely duplicate posts (and a few missing ones) on the home page and any broken links floating around out there—I decided the moment I took on more freelance work that I’d like to also learn to code this site (not recommended, by the way). You can peruse all the new categories I’ve added to if found, make. at the top. Find is for small business and creative features, make is for all things DIY; learn is dedicated to creating a creative career, and explore is where all my travels + adventures fall. Speaking of, I’ll be posting about my trip home to the Pacific Northwest tomorrow! If you’d like to follow along, update your reader with the new URL and let me know what you think.
