Yael Herold fashion design

November 12, 2014 by Angela

Lately I’ve had less time for hanging out on Etsy (so. sad.), but before I took a little hiatus that led to only having 3 items in my shop, promising new vintage listings and not delivering, and totally (temporarily) abandoning the treasury team, I discovered Yael Herold, a fashion designer. Her shop, YaelHeroldSparkles, is all about interesting, quality fabrics, and unique, feminine pieces. Each design is a work of art in itself, which isn’t surprising considering Yael’s other media include paintings and installations.

All of her different forms of art are distinct from one another on first glance, but they all come together in being Yael’s business and form of expression. I really just love when people are able to turn their creative genius into a career (why can’t that be everyone?!), so I had to get her story…

I am a free spirit, traveler, festivals decorator, and a fashion designer. My mother is an artist and a fashion designer and I got from her the passion to create. While doing inflatable 3D installations I was sewing a lot of different shapes together, which got me inspired to work more and more with special cuts and soft cloths.

I need this top!

How she got started in fashion: I started sewing my own clothes and got very positive feedback from people around me, so I started to take orders and make more. So every item I design, I wear for awhile to feel it and to hear what people’s desires would be, that’s a good tip for other designers to do. The most important thing for me is the quality of the cloth and its softness, and that the designs are unique, feminine and special.

This top is one of her favorites right now, made with a soft viscose in “stone”, one shoulder zipper, and a long drape on one side. She loves it because it looks beautiful on different kinds of women. I love the minimalist but intentional design.

Yael creates from her Berlin studio – a big art house in the center of the city, and also sells her clothes in select Berlin and Tel Aviv boutiques.

Big Sur, CA

October 13, 2014 by Angela

Sometimes you dream of doing something or going somewhere and build it up in your head: what you’d do, what you’d see, what pictures you’d take, what you’d leave with – but no matter how you prepare, you don’t know what to expect. Sometimes you build it up so high that almost nothing could really meet those fantastical expectations. Big Sur is a rare place that surpasses all those otherworldly expectations I set before we left. If you google McWay falls, you’ll see endless photos just like mine… but being there yourself at the edge of the ocean – it’s hard to explain; one day I’ll find the words – you just gotta try it sometime. Today I’m editing hundreds of iPhone photos in between projects. More to come…

After this, we headed a bit north to a state beach just before sunset. It was a short hike to the water over a small creek, through fields, under canopies of trees, and finally across pristine sand that turned into stones beneath the waves. Somehow it was better. And then there was Monterey, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, and San Francisco. There’s so much you can see in four days. Kevin and I had an amazing time exploring these places. Now it’s Monday and this morning LA was blanketed in fog and I went for a perfect walk but it’s back to go, go, go all week long. We got back from our trip last Tuesday and I can’t say I’m happy to be home. Going from three days of this – no setbacks, no negativity, just awe at the world being all those things I’d imagined but better – so much better than my pictures describe – I’m kiiinda having a hard time with it. I am looking forward to a few things though – editing more photos, some DIYs, writing, making Seattle plans… What’s your week look like?

New garden & sea headbands

October 3, 2014 by Angela

Gosh I just love fall. It’s been cooler for two days in a row (and by cool I mean the 70s and I am well aware that’s nonsense) so I got all over-excited and wore my scarf out and about yesterday morning. It was pretty chilly actually. Not to mention that grocery stores are freezing…

So really, I consider myself prepared. But judging from the looks and comments I got, we haven’t quite reached scarf wearing weather yet. Sigh. It’s also been super foggy for two days and I wish I could’ve hiked up to where we shot these headbands and done another little shoot.

I’ve been seeing that a lot of my crafty friends are getting ready for fall shows. Sooo exciting! I went back and forth about applying to some when I decided that with my prices and pieces online-only might be good for me right now. Selling on Etsy is basically the least expensive business you can have, so to do anything else I’d have to raise my prices a bit – definitely enough to surprise people – so I’ll have to think on that. But I can’t wait to go shop the LA markets this year.

LA lately

October 2, 2014 by Angela

We’re heading into yet another heat wave here in LA but I won’t say all signs of fall are lost… A few crisp leaves + light wispy clouds keep me on edge every day. When will I meditate in the light breeze? When will I walk out for a morning walk and, on second thought, come back to grab my sweater? (If you think this sounds dramatic I assure you I’m toning down both my wish for summer to end and longing for forever fall.) Lucky for us – we’re headed up the coast this weekend for four whole days sans computer, work, and LA life (sorry twitter, I love ya but I need a break!). My new iPhone 6 was a much needed yet major splurge, though, and I’m taking advantage of it during the trip (henceforth referred to as “the retreat”) with all the instas I can snap. The last photo of last night’s sunset in the valley is one of my first photos. Here’s to a weekend away and hoping I don’t drop this new, case-less phone trying to grab the perfect pic of the Pacific! See you Wednesday.

10 things to try in October

October 1, 2014 by Angela

Happy October!!!! Annnd I meant every exclamation I typed. October is everything: it’s fall, it’s nature, it’s crafting, it’s warmth. And you may know by now – I am huge on making plans. To me, putting it in writing solidifies it. If I write it, I’ll do it. Fall is my favorite season, so I want to make it count! Here’s what I’m planning…

1. List my shawls. I created this new shawl & scarf, and just finished shooting them. I have just one of these mustard shawls the shop – the yarn is discontinued.

2. Take a few days off. This weekend we’re headed to Big Sur & San Francisco! It’s my first weekend off in quite some time and the first vacay in months. Even on the way to Sequoia I had last minute projects, so this time I’m leaving my laptop home.

3. Revamp my closet. I’m so uninspired by my clothes right now. Working from home can = PJs all day (not trying to complain!) and 90 degree weather totally kills my fall vibes. Whether I thrift or blow all my money on an online shopping binge, I’m determined to deal with this, stat.

4. Transfer to WordPress. I use WordPress exclusively for every blog I write on except my own and I’m starting to cave. I even designed a mockup of my new look. If any of you have tips for transferring, please do tell. I plan to keep my name & some of my favorite posts, but other than that – all will be fresh and new and more “me”.

5. Read, read, read. Where does the time go? I always try to make time for reading but it gets pushed down the list. Yet when I force myself to pick a book off my shelf, take a walk, and head to a quiet cafe for an hour or two – it’s always worth it.

6. Put me first. When I’m happy, I’m a better person, basically, but lately things have gotten in the way. I heard some advice in regard to writing: to be your true self – the writer you know you are – you have to start putting it first. Will you disappoint, piss off, or confuse people? For sure. But if writing (or whatever) is in you, you gotta put in the time to become who you were meant to be. I love it and I’m sticking to it this month… Now it’s out in the open so it’s pretty much guaranteed.

7. Plan my trip home. It’s a little bittersweet – some of the plans I’ve made for Seattle have already fallen through, but I want to be optimistic, see as many old friends as I can see, and do some super touristy Seattle things that I miss like crazzzzy.

8. Go outside. What this means… I’ll always be figuring out. But my goal all day, every day? To immerse myself in the simultaneously serene, exhilarating, and striking beauty of the native world. Kiiinda hard in a city of 3.8 million (!!!) people.

9. Become a foodie. Can’t lie, I love eating out. Trying new food has been one of my favorite things about living here, but it’s easy to fall in that trap of only eating at my go-to spots. My goal for this month is to venture out into the (cheaper) LA food scene!

10. Celebrate fall. There’s only so many autumns you get in life. Sure, it’s different here than anywhere else, but you can find the cozy feeling & crisp air if you know where to look.

National coffee day

September 30, 2014 by Angela

Did you celebrate National Coffee Day today? I love these days but they really sneak up on me. It’s not like NCD is on every calendar. So naturally, I really feel like having simply my morning cup was super inadequate. We’ll call it a low-key holiday. I managed to put together a commemorative list of coffee posts old and new from around blog world, based off some of my favorite pins to my coffee board (yep). Check ’em out here:

A lovely Portland food recap from way back in 2012, featuring my favorite coffee ever, Stumptown, on Desserts for Breakfast. Pretty much my whole top 5 lattes list consists of lattes brewed by Stumptown, though only one has actually been purchased in their cafe, in the LA Arts District.

I recently tried this recipe for Coffee syrups + Cold brew by How Sweet It Is… It got me through many a 90 degree summer day without having to turn on my coffee pot.

Flickr photographer Marika (mariyaki) knows just how to photography coffee for autumn. I must say, coffee pairs well with fall leaves.

This photo from the Lily blog reminded me how much I love to sit down with a good book and sip my coffee. I’ll definitely make a point to do that this week.

Portland blogger Kali of Bird is the Word shares a little home/studio tour in this post, and looks so cozy with her coffee during work-at-home afternoons. Wouldn’t it be nice to sit inside on a rainy day, working along, drinking your coffee?

Stumbled upon this Caribbean Coconut & Espresso Milkshake by Cooking with Books and it’s #1 on my list of coffee desserts to make (yes, there’s a whole list now!). Next would be this Coffee Chocolate Pudding by FreshGround.

Of course, one last amazing thing about coffee: all the pretty mugs! The one I photographed is from Starbucks. I also love this “but first, coffee mug” by Printable Wisdom (I have the saying posted in my kitchen too) as well as this photographer mug.

National Coffee Day – what’s your take?
