Easy crochet coasters

April 8, 2014 by Angela

I’m absolutely in love with coral for spring (I know, who isn’t?) and recently instagrammed this amazing cotton yarn I picked up at the craft store. I don’t usually use this type of yarn but there is no color like it in any other brand. So these coasters were born. The best part is that they go nicely with my aqua Anthropologie coasters… I love this color combo!

Seattle bits

April 4, 2014 by Angela

Last month, when Kevin and I took a quick trip home to see family, we got Stumptown coffee in Seattle, then ate at this quirky deli/cafe, which is in a converted home. The sky was the brightest gray, filtering light through the clouds, and the rain was relentless. I think my raincoat saw more action that weekend than ten months of Cali living. Food, thrifting, and coffee… just what I wanted in a Sunday morning. I tend to take more pictures when I’m out and about in my neighborhood than when I travel, so these two are the only one’s that made it home from the weekend, but they sum it up quite well.

Spring style

March 30, 2014 by Angela

In spring, everything just sort of melts together: photography, nature, style, art, writing, exploring. Last week, Charity and I spent a quick afternoon getting coffee at one of my new favorite cafes (have I mentioned how amazing it is that we both ended up in socal?) and doing a little wandering around this cute tree-lined neighborhood.
Like I said before, I really want to throw everything from my closet and start clean! I definitely can’t do that, so I headed to the mall and bought a few things, including this kimono, which I paired with a mini dress and my flea market geode necklace. It pretty much sums up everything I want to be, fashionably speaking:
Be prepared for florals to take over my blog for the next few months! xx

Spring walks

March 25, 2014 by Angela

It’s no secret that my preferred mode of transportation is always to walk. When I was younger I’d walk to the library, the creek, the playground, my school; I’d walk anywhere I could and still be back by dark. Although the weather is seldom unlike spring here, the flowers are in bloom and it feels even better to get out and explore. We went on a quick hike over the weekend and I can’t wait to see what else there is to do in this city in the spring time. There’s a big tree outside my window growing right in front of me (I hope the apartment managers don’t trim it like last season!) and the birds are whizzing by. Even with temperatures dipping into the 60s (I know, real life?) this week, spring is in the air. <3

Birthday wishlist

March 24, 2014 by Angela

My birthday is in less than two weeks so naturally my urge to shop is growing exponentially. I satisfied some of it by snagging myself some treats in the form of dresses and jewelry at the flea market yesterday but i’m going to be in my mid-twenties… let me say that again… MID-TWENTIES (it’s a big deal!) which has got me going back and forth quite a bit emotionally, and I think retail therapy is the temporary fix I need. Suddenly I want to change my wardrobe style completely and start from scratch. Do you ever get that way? Anyway, here’s what’s on my internet birthday wishlist, and expanding by the minute…

Foldover crossbody bag from madebyhank, $68 — could you ask for a cuter casual bag?

Crystal bomb necklace by Debra Baxter for Beklina. I’ve been looking for nice, high quality, raw crystal or mineral necklaces forever and knew these were perfect. And they’re on sale for an extra 30% off. I’d have already bought it for myself if I didn’t realize that the silver one is the only one left in stock! Too good to be true, I really wanted a brass chain. 🙁

I want to redo just about everything in my apartment right now, but I’d settle for vintage tropical decor. Love, love, love this pineapple from The White Pepper, and can’t get enough of their wonderful shop.

Art yarn. Have you ever used art yarn? I’m completely in love with this handspun yarn by Yarn Mantra on flickr. They haven’t uploaded anything on Etsy in awhile but if this was listed–it would be mine. Head on over to flickr for more OOAK yarn. Basically, moral of the story: you always want what you can’t have.

What’s on your wishlist lately?

On “doing it all”.

March 21, 2014 by Angela

How was your first day of spring? It was such a beautiful day yesterday that I thought I’d share a few of my recent instagrams. Last week in Seattle I visited my family and experienced 20-hour-straight rain before things cleared up a bit on my way back to LA (typical). Then I got to experience the official first day of spring here on a walk with the flowers sprouting all over the neighborhood.

Looking toward downtown Seattle on a very wet Sunday.

Exploring a bit of the east side with my family, near Snoqualmie, WA. After a weekend of rain, this view reminded me what I missed so much about the Northwest!

I’ve been walking around LA since I got back. It was 80 degrees the other day (so, summer?!).

After walking, I made a list of all the things I want to do and started planning how to get there. Right now–this year, this month–I have a major opportunity to actively grow my work, including crafting, blogging, and writing. It’s exciting and scary; the biggest thing is turning this inspiration into action.

I drew connections among my passions, finding common threads between seemingly unrelated things. I’ve started freelance writing this year, and building project after project truly excites me, but also forces me to think about how to continue to practice crochet, learn about my craft, and make that a viable source of income as well. I’ve always known that I’d be the type of person to sort of “do it all”, but I never knew I’d feel so all over the place, like I’m trying to make too many things work at once instead of just focusing on one (or two…). At the same time, I think some of us, usually creatives, are just that way. We just like to pursue our passions until they aren’t just hobbies anymore but are ways of life. We like to build upon one thing until it becomes another and another. I keep seeing women who write, design, sell clothes, take pictures, own a store, and countless other things all under this all-encompassing umbrella of “self-employment” or “business-owner” or “artist”, and it reminds me that it’s possible. Sometimes all the things I like to do don’t contain clear connections but I know that through experience, as my hobbies and career and art changes and evolves, I’ll forge a path that’s unique to me.

By working through this I realized a few things (that will hopefully help anyone who ever feels stuck between wanting to do it all but not knowing how to start, too—):

  1. Even if you can’t do it all, you’ll find that the important things fall to the front.
  2. Everything is connected in some small way, even if it’s just that they are equally important to you.
  3. There are many people (just scroll through your bloglovin’ feed if you need a refresher) that look like they’re doing it all by themselves, but the truth is, it’s a combination of ridiculously hard work, aspiration, goals, planning, and support, all coming together to create that brand or career.

In what ways are you “doing it all”? What aspects of your life involve different paths?
