Another DIY tissue paper garland

March 19, 2014 by Angela

I loved how easy it was to make our pink, white, and gold tissue paper garland for the E. Magnolia photo shoot, so I made my own mini version for the bedroom. I used a pretty similar method to Studio DIY’s mini tassel garland, including cute washi tape for securing the fringe. So, if you’re looking for simple, inexpensive, and super cute party decor or a backdrop, here’s how it’s done:

Gather your supplies–scissors, tissue paper (one sheet = one tassel), cute washi tape, and string.

Starting with an individual sheet, fold the paper width-wise, and keep folding until it looks similar to original packaging. The more you fold it, the quicker you’ll have your strips of paper. Insert scissors into each side and cut up the length to eliminate extra folds. Then, cut it into about 4-5 strips; unfold the strips individually; set aside.
I wanted each tassel to look the same with alternating colors, so I cut ALL strips before starting, then pieced them back together after. It’s an extra step, so if you don’t want to, you can just make the tassels as you go.
Stack the strips on top of each other and fold over the string. Twist the top a bit to make it fuller, so it doesn’t stay so flat. Then secure it with a strip of tape.
Repeat until you have a desired length, and hang! Mine only had 8 tassels so it’s pretty small.

By the way, have you ever had “cheap” washi tape? I was thrilled to find an EIGHT pack for $4 at TJ Maxx (my secret place to get craft supplies) and used it for this project. Some of them started peeling off right away, which is when I discovered—not all washi tapes are created equal. I’ll continue to buy on Etsy from now on.

Have you made a tassel garland before? What was your method?

DIY map printed book covers

March 19, 2014 by Angela

I recently rearranged my bookshelf and noticed a turquoise-y theme… Funny how no matter how you try to emulate a certain style your own personal aesthetic comes out in some way or another. I thrifted a vintage atlas a few weeks ago and got to making book covers for the less pretty of my collected books. Just fold the paper over each flap, leaving enough room to fold a little pocket for the book to slip over, and cut to size!

Etsy wishlist

March 14, 2014 by Angela

My birthday is coming up…. Just sayin’.
1. Hand dyed yarn by ShornFibers, $17
2. Fabric necklace by Homako, $58
3. Upcycled flats by TheWhiteRibbon, $85
4. Lip butter by HerbivoreBotanicals, $28
5. Gold Print by PuddleduckPaperCo, $15, or any of the cute stationery in shop!
6. Hand dyed purse by ArrowsDesign, $75, who I’ve long been obsessed with.
Happy Friday! I’m spending the weekend in Seattle, which I couldn’t be looking forward to ANY more! I haven’t been home since I moved to California 9 months ago. It’s a quick trip, and all I know for sure is that I’ll be drinking lots of coffee and hanging with my family.

What’s on your personal wishlist lately?

DIY floral bookmarks

March 12, 2014 by Angela

My personal style changes with the seasons. In the fall, I’m all about earth tones, plaids, chunky knits, and slouchy sweaters. But when it comes to spring, it’s nothing but flowers. Anyone with me? My latest DIY on Bright, Bold & Beautiful is all about making use of those faux flowers I bought the other day–remember my hair accessories? As it turns out, my crafting style is all all pretty + floral, too. A few dollars goes a long way! See how to make these DIY bookmarks here.

DIY garlands + vintage clothes

March 10, 2014 by Angela

If you’ve stopped by E. Magnolia Vintage any time in the last week, you’ll notice that our shop looks amazingly different than it used to! While it’s always fun to find new places to shoot our vintage clothes, my past-roommate/friend/co-owner Charity and I both had a vision for our shop that can be summed up in just a few words: clean + pretty with a creative (and in our case, DIY) flair. I visited her in San Diego a few weekends ago to bring our vision to life, and here’s our exciting new look:
I’m beyond happy to say that some of our new pieces are going quick and I’m even more excited to say that we’re still not done! This whole month we’ll be getting our shop up to speed, and soon we’ll need to have another photo shoot. There’s even talk of adding a few handmade goods into the mix–all in the same sweet, romantic, and carefree style of the clothes we choose.

If you’re wondering how to DIY your own photo shoot, head over to West Coast Whimsy, where Charity wrote about our process in turning her living room into a one-day creative studio. Check back this week for the how-to on this tissue paper tassel garden–it’s super easy & I’ll be making another one for my apartment.

Have you turned your home into a makeshift photo studio before? I’d love to hear about it 🙂

All photos by Charity or I. Shop East Magnolia Vintage here.

March resolutions

March 4, 2014 by Angela

This month, I find myself with a little more time than usual. Yet, my list of things to do is like water–it spreads to fill whatever space of time I have, no matter how small or large. That’s why, what’s on the list needs to matter.

Instead of thinking of them as goals, which are more like plans, I think of them as resolutions: a microcosm of the habits I hope to form in 2014, wrapped tightly and packaged into one 30-day period. We are creatures of habit, and I think that one month of following my own resolutions isn’t quite as scary as an entire year. I mean, can you believe we’re already in March? I’m determined not to let it go by unnoticed.

I have 12 spring resolutions for this month, in hopes that I’ll form habits of things I actually want to do regularly, as opposed to those things I put on the to-do list and sigh about. January and February were months of much forced creativity. This spring, I resolve to act; to turn challenges into opportunities for something new. Here’s 5 of the 12 I’ve written down, in either daily or weekly installments… Let me know if any of these are on your March goals, too!

1. Read a new book or magazine each week.
2. Eat a healthy breakfast daily.
3. Go somewhere new each week.
4. Make/do something new for the apartment each week.
5. Step outside of my comfort zone each week.
