Packing up the Northwest

June 25, 2013 by Angela

I am finally settled in with my boyfriend in our new apartment in California! It’s such a drastic change I haven’t even had time to react! But things are going so well. Back in April I wrote about how sometimes you don’t want to talk about what you’re doing for fear things will come crashing down — I had a lot of disappointments in the past year since graduating college & once again I find myself almost whispering my successes when my friends ask how I am — I don’t want to jinx it! Yes, I’m a little superstitious. By little I mean a lot

So yes, I have to admit — things are going very well! I have lots of pictures to share. But going through my camera I dug up these final photos of Seattle’s Pike Place Market & my packing process in Washington before leaving it all behind.

So beautiful & bright! I knew if I was going to move I’d better do it quick because western Washington in the summer is close to perfection & I knew I’d change my mind… only to be disappointed when the dreary winter months set in again. Today, it almost sprinkled — gone as soon as it came — and I was back at home again.

Left my inspiration board behind — and can’t wait to begin building a gallery wall in my living room. I’m SO ready to share photos of our place, but will wait until it’s a bit more complete. We’ve come across a few great finds for our place, spent way too much money, and bickered over style (he likes leather and dark wood, which I loathe, I like both modern industrial and shabby cute, it never ends), and finally agreed on the staples, creating a living space that’s bright and a little beachy. We’re happy to call California home now.

I don’t know why I snapped this photo of my horrible packing skills — look at that can, empty except for a stone… but the quote on that newspaper is, “What do you want to be when you grow up? Ok, go.” And that’s what I did.

Moving to Los Angeles!

May 28, 2013 by Angela

Before I go to bed at 9 pm from sheer exhaustion–mostly exhaustion of thoughts and plans and not actual actions–I wanted to post my very exciting news. After living just outside Seattle for almost my whole life, save for college which wasn’t too far either, I am moving to California–to Los Angeles! I’ve slowly felt more and more unsatisfied with living here in WA for awhile now since graduation, knowing that if I didn’t go on an adventure and explore a new city soon, I’d end up here forever, resenting my hometown (melodramatic, maybe, but how I feel, yes). I love Seattle, I love the Pacific Northwest, and it will forever be home, but I haven’t seen much of the world in my 23 years and I’m ready to try something new. I’m soso excited, too, because I found a job that will allow me to begin my career as opposed to just a place to work, and I am hoping that this is the perfect way to explore and build a future, too. Kevin and I will be traveling the 1200 something miles next month, and I’m happy and thrilled and terrified all at once. He seems to be handling it perfectly, though, as always.
I checked out some film photography to see different perspectives of LA and loved these three photos posted here. Definitely check out the links at the bottom for more from each artist. The crazy thing is that these photos could be totally incorrect representations of the city, and I wouldn’t really know! I guess I will find out!

The scariest part of moving is finding a place to live. If anyone has tips on finding an apartment when you’re not local: please help. Other than that, the other thing I am really worried about is my pre-move vacation….

Kevin and I planned a trip to California before I actually applied to the job. I had planned to ask you all for tips on flying, because I’m absolutely terrified… but now it seems I’ve launched myself into a much larger adventure than just an airplane ride! Still, I have a pretty debilitating fear of flying, and if you have any kind words that may help, they’d be much appreciated.

THERE. It’s all out–no more blogging without all my big plans laid out! Phew. 🙂 Have you moved far away before?

*Photos also on my Pinterest page.

PS: a happy coincidence that this is my 300th blog post 🙂

DIY 1 dollar wall art

May 18, 2013 by Angela

You’ll need:
* Recycled card stock or paper.
* One of the stamps from the $1 bin at Michael’s or other craft stores
* Washable markers or ink
* Clothespins for hanging your art!
I got both of these stamps on clearance for .50 each at Michael’s after Valentine’s Day. The typewriter said “be mine” which is easy to remove for year-round use if you use a pen instead of an inkpad. I call this the $1 DIY because I only bought the stamps. Most of us have washable pens and a little extra paper. This card stock is extra thick because it was the backing for a pack of stickers or supplies. I always save seemingly useless pieces like that– am I resourceful or just a hoarder? A fine line.
What’s your cheapest DIY for the home?

Etsy front page feature

May 14, 2013 by Angela

Last week my crochet ear warmer headband popped up on the front page of Etsy! If you’re a seller, you know how thrilling it is to see your items in a treasury, and more so if it is picked for the front page! I was happy to be in the company of great sellers. (Please excuse my awful screen shot–in my excitement I forgot what to do!) Marieken from Invisible Crown curated this and thanks to a different seller’s twitter shout out I was able to see it live. I love that the front pages are based on a community effort of discovery; if I had one thing to say to Etsy it would be: never do away with treasuries. My favorite piece here is the iceberg print. What’s yours?
In other news, I saw The Great Gatsby! Have you seen it yet?! Fitzgerald is my favorite author–a love that came long after my required reading of Gatsby in high school and one that was cultivated in college with summers spent sipping iced coffee at the park with Gatsby and Tender is the Night and a collection of short stories in hand and a highlighter at my side for those extra-captivating pieces of prose.
The film didn’t disappoint: how could it with Leonardo cast as Gatsby? Without giving anything away: I was impressed by its alliance to the story, its liberal interpretation of Fitzgerald’s lavish party descriptions, and beautiful visuals. The scene with Gatsby and all the shirts was almost too ideal. Yes, the narration seemed forced at times–but I wouldn’t give it up and risk lacking piece of the original text–and it was quite long–but what could have been cut?

Photographer Jesy Almaguer

May 3, 2013 by Angela

I’m not quite sure how I happened across Jesy Almaguer’s portfolio website, but once I clicked I stayed awhile. Jesy’s main focus has been portraits of children, but has since moved to editorials, fashion shoots, and one pretty collection called “Beautiful & Ordinary”.

Some of her photos are breathtakingly creative and beautiful such as this collection and some are just plain fun. I love the color and composition at play and I knew I wanted to share her work with everyone! The best part about Jesy’s website is that she has plenty of work to look at–I can see the unique styling in each series. Take a look at her work here, and report back with your favorite collection.
This week I read Let The Great World Spin -definitely a captivating read, started the novel Luminarium and caught up on my favorite blog. Recommended reading: recent posts by Here & Now and A Beautiful Mess’s DIY tables.
Pinned too many photos from the above artist and went on a California dreamin’ binge with inspiration from SF and beautiful adventures.
Loved this blogger’s take on yellow for spring.
What did you love this week? I also loved that I am going to be away enjoying the sunshine for the weekend! It’s supposed to be in the 80s – which seems totally crazy!

Craft therapy

April 24, 2013 by Angela

Instagram

I finally bought myself some really beautiful handspun, hand dyed yarn for no reason other than to crochet myself a little present. Isn’t it so pastel-pretty? I whipped up this women’s crochet earwarmer which is just like the ones in my shop, only with just one strand of yarn because of the thick wool. I bought the yarn off Etsy from twistedwool (almost didn’t want to link back because I so want to go back & buy the rest!) and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the color mix but I’m in LOVE. All my favorite subtle, girly springy, almost Easter-eqsue colors in one skein!

I wish I could afford to stock my shop with only crochet accessories made from hand dyed yarns. For the fall, I hope to be able to provide a few pieces. Unfortunately I’d have to price items much, much higher – which is so worth it – but my goal is to provide amazing handmade accessories to people like me, who wouldn’t be able to afford to shop on Etsy if it weren’t for those more affordable shops. And being able to do that is really important. Buying in bulk & during sales has helped a lot, but I definitely can’t wait to be able to add more color combos to my inventory.
Around the same time I received my wonderful yarn in the mail, my boyfriend brought me to a new craft store when I was feeling a little down, and I got some new crafts just for fun. Sometimes I’m so busy thinking of the purpose of each of the things I make – i.e., to sell, to adorn my home, to function in a specific room, etc., that I don’t just buy that cute letter “A” or craft journal, or whatever.
What have you made lately? What do you do when some of your favorite materials are too expensive?
