Be: environmentally conscious

April 22, 2012 by Angela

Happy Earth Day! I hope you found time to celebrate the B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L planet we live on. I’ve been searching all week for a comprehensive list of simple things we should always to do respect the environment and make it a better place for all of us live! Unfortunately, I found no such list. There is just so much to be said.
A lot of bloggers are crafty/DIY people. Handmade is pretty much always better than mass produced. But we should all think about where we get our materials. There is often a better alternative. I especially love seeing paper crafters who use only recycled items. Paper is such an abundant resource that I don’t really see a need to buy more.
Many of us use recyclable bags already. But if you buy a lot of veggies, you might want to think about how much plastic you use for each of those.
If everyone made a small change in the way they use plastic, we’d eliminate SO much waste.
When I first came to college, I figured everyone was like me– obsessive passionate recycler, conscious about wasting things, tries to save energy – but that’s not true. I live in a very environmentally conscious city, but I’ve still met plenty of people that throw garbage bags of recyclable material away constantly.
These bloom+grow and party favor projects are simply amazing. You don’t need to have an Earth Day party, but if you have some things lying around that would normally be trashed, it would be fun to make a newspaper party hat or a chip-bag garland.
If you work at a business that has a lot to throw away, consider all the alternative uses for those items. When I worked at a gift shop I’d bring home the cardboard boxes and use them when I sold things on eBay.

The most important thing you can do is educate yourself and others. Some areas that people need to know about are: pollution, waste, energy, sustainability, and animal safety.

DIY pretty floral jewelry display

April 13, 2012 by Angela

Hey everyone! Remember those fake flowers I brought for a floral wreath? Well, my wreath went horribly wrong. I only had those three large flowers, lots of little buds, and wires . . .  so naturally, the whole thing looked a little lopsided. As I was wrapping up to trash the whole thing, I noticed I had pulled the tops of the flowers off of their large stems and could possibly use them for something.
Caution: This is a long post 🙂
DIY Jewelry Hanger:
{fake flowers from Michael’s, sharp scissors, hot glue/gun, decorative tape, a cork board with a wooden frame, acrylic paint, and if you want, lace and ribbons to decorate with}
It seems like a lot of materials, but you could easily work with what you already have and just get the big stuff. Bulletin boards are for sale at Goodwill all the time. In fact, I think years back when I bought this board, it was at Goodwill.
You can simply tear the tops off the flowers here, and use one of the large stems. Measure some stems to make sure they’ll fit with your board. Use your hot glue gun to attach a flower at each end. I liked adding the purple rose for an asymmetrical design.
I glued the ends of each of these little lavender flowers onto the larger stem. You can pop off the very end to make sure it fits right.
I used my little deco masking tape to ensure the stability of the flower. Besides, it looks cute! I got this kind off Etsy a couple years ago.
Here, I decorated by tying vintage lace + a mint green ribbon around each end. Use whatever you have on hand!
Paint the edge of your board any color you please – I don’t have photos of this part because it was simply a happy accident that I had already painted a board of mine when I discovered that my purple flowers were the exact same shade! It’s pretty self-explanatory, though.
Ps. . .  below is the crown I made from the leftover flowers. . . too bad it doesn’t fit right! 🙁
And by the way, it looks good as just bulletin or inspiration board!
Let me know if you’re inspired and come up with any project of your own or try mine!

Roominiscent photography

March 24, 2012 by Angela

Today’s feature is an artist I recently discovered on Etsy, through someone in my circle. Who knew that circle thing would actually be so great? I used to think it was just a bunch of updates and “notifications” I didn’t need. The shop I found is roominiscent!
First of all, isn’t this a great presentation of dreamy Polaroid-style photographs?
Eunice is a super nice + talented photographer who hails from… Washington state a.k.a. the best state of them all. I love that she offers mini prints and greeting cards of these natural abstract and blurry scenes. They are truly miniature pieces of art.
It is obvious she doesn’t just upload every photo she takes, but focuses on creating resonant prints.
Be sure to check out Eunice’s shop here.

Fashion designer Chrystal

January 27, 2012 by Angela

Today I am featuring another artist from Etsy on my blog. She also happens to be another international artist, just like last week, but Marika is from Athens!  I am really excited for this feature because I have admired her handmade dresses and skirts for a long time now! (One of those people who are on your favorites or  Pinterest forever).
First of all, I just love the aged looking photographs used in some of the shop’s photos. But I also love that there are more “product” type photos, so it seems like you really know what you get with each item.
I love the mixture of fabrics and styles – lace, stretch, velvet, asymmetrical designs, etc. The pink velvet mini dress and the blue polka dot dress featured here are my two favorite items! What are yours?
Check Chrystal out on these websites, you’ll be glad you did! Their website also has a beautiful look book and interesting blog.

Photographer violet d’ art

January 20, 2012 by Angela

Today I am featuring photography from the shop violet d’ art! Violet is a photographer in Bulgaria specializing in nature, vintage inspired art, still life + more.
I love the different textures she enhances her already pretty photos with to give them a nostalgic and dreamy feel. I’ve seen a lot of photographers with a dreamy style, but Violet really sets herself apart with her mix of nature (I love nature photography), people, and still life. I also love how she masters light in both bright, natural settings and low light settings. Make sure to visit her shop to see almost 200 items featured!
