One of the first things I did when I got to Washington was go buy a new hook and yarn, because I’m finally in a region where I just might need a scarf. I love crocheting but ever since facing the fact that being a winter accessory maker in Los Angeles isn’t quite the dream, I haven’t picked up a hook in weeks. Another reason for that is that I’m trying to be a more conscious crafter, and I’ve learned that if yarn is cheap – it probably isn’t sustainable. Coming across Julie’s shop, The Sweet Wild, on Instagram (and finding out that she’s in Washington, too), I thought it was the perfect opportunity to talk to a pro about sourcing sustainable materials, and supporting the slow fashion movement. She was kind enough to tell me all about her business and process for today’s post. Check it out… [Read more…] about slow fashion & sustainable sourcing with the sweet wild
photo diary: glimmer of home
Yesterday I had to take a single photo for a blog post and being away from my little space, it reminded me how difficult “working from anywhere” can be. But as the light wouldn’t cooperate, and my backgrounds wouldn’t blur just right, I called it quits for the afternoon. Daylight had almost faded entirely, and as I went to get something from the car, I remembered something I’d been wanting to do: photograph the spiderwebs in the yard. I don’t know why they’re here, and it makes me jumpy when I walk through the driveway, but spiderwebs are all. over. the. yard. right now. Each one of them a home for another’s relative.

twenty things to write about this month // 3
October got off to a rocky start with me struggling to process so many horrific things on the news and us having to deal with some issues back in LA, but it’s a new week and Monday has (let’s not jinx it now) gotten off to a surprisingly lovely start. Did anyone work on the writing ideas I blogged about over the summer? Last time I posted, it was all about creative nonfiction. I didn’t go with a specific theme, but this month I wanted more of them to go with the season. I just started Moorea Seal’s 52 Lists Project so fall is on my mind even more so. My goal this month is to pick back up with journaling, so these twenty things to write about will have a home there: [Read more…] about twenty things to write about this month // 3
(almost) crisp autumn days
I may be not-so-silently urging fall on its way, but with a long, difficult LA summer of over 90 degree days, I’ll take an unseasonably warm Seattle September, no question. Hours after I arrived, I was off foraging for ferns and pine needles and golden leaves. There was no waiting for fall, knowing it didn’t quite arrive on September 23rd. There was finding pieces of it in the (almost) crisp air and on the cool ground. [Read more…] about (almost) crisp autumn days
3 steps to a more effective to-do list
Like I said in my post about prioritizing as a freelancer, I’ve been going back to basics lately in how I organize my day. A simple to do list has proven the most effective for actually getting stuff done—not dreaming or planning or goal setting, but actually doing the work. Of course, I’ve learned the hard way (if only you could see the amount of notebooks I’ve filled with incomplete to dos, sorry paper) that not all lists are effective. Assuming you create your list at the beginning of each day and prioritize that list based on deadlines and urgency, this 3-step process will guarantee a much more effective to-do than both a post-it and your most intricate planner.
endless LA summer + recent style
I came across HeyGirlMarket back in June and thought their jewelry + accessories were so fun I did a little roundup here on the blog. Their bright colors and beadwork were too perfect for summer. Lucky for me, it’s summer basically all the time, so when I got a chance to try one of their bracelets, it wasn’t hard to wear it out, even in late September. And if it’s actual fall where you live, a bracelet like this would be perfect for a neutrals-only outfit, even if it’s not so sunny.
