Call it a side effect of working in social media, but essentially every time I leave the house now, it’s second nature to take my iPhone out and document what I see. Lately I’ve zeroed in on my projects a bit more, and don’t need quite *all* the photos I end up with. Take the events I went to last weekend, for example. Hanging out with Charity who actually had been photographing one of our festivities for work, I just couldn’t put away the camera myself. Might as well share ’em if I have ’em, right? Anyway. Holiday activities are seriously the best. I feel so warm and happy when enveloped in the merriment. Living 1200 miles away from my entire family and many people I’m close with, I have to make an effort to get in the holiday spirit. Especially with the bursts of 80 degree weather sprinkled throughout the months. Charity and I both are in the same boat when it comes to far away families and missing the PNW this time of year, but our date spent painting the town red (and green) definitely helped. October, briefly, and Pacific Northwest portraits
There were a few things, big and small, at play in this shoot. I’ll just list them here: 1) Having been in Seattle for a month, wanting to appreciate a quintessentially Northwest setting before boarding the flight home, 2) Never ceasing to think of my grandmother who had passed almost exactly two months prior, and recently having spent time with my mom, who gifted me Gramma’s wedding band to wear around my neck (I bought a gold chain and feather charm to go along with it shortly after). I wanted to honor her, but have been having trouble doing so in words., 3) Having recently purchased this dress as an impulse buy on a day I wandered downtown alone, feeling a strange, familiar blend of happy and hopeless. Lastly, I wanted to be able to play around with Lightroom + VSCO, and I often find that portraits lend themselves best to experimentation. I didn’t intend on the botanical gardens being the setting for this mixture of objectives, but on a chilled, rainy day, we were the only ones there, and wrapped up this little session in under thirty minutes. I was a fool in my dress, but now I’m happy I braved the cold in order to allow the photographs to tell my story, rather than words, just this once. Photo diary: my favorite things are the simple things
I briefly touched on my desire to blog in a way that sometimes reads like a journal yet also offers something to the reader, in my post on The Blog Market this week. I hope you were inspired by Julie’s story in the feature I published on Monday (if you missed it, it’s here). As always, I jump from one theme, style, topic, thought to another. Today, it’s on all of the simple things that bring me joy, that I too often walk right past, instead of letting wash over me. My hope: that you’ll fill in the blanks with our own favorite things and refer to them whenever necessary (it is always necessary). photo diary: glimmer of home
Yesterday I had to take a single photo for a blog post and being away from my little space, it reminded me how difficult “working from anywhere” can be. But as the light wouldn’t cooperate, and my backgrounds wouldn’t blur just right, I called it quits for the afternoon. Daylight had almost faded entirely, and as I went to get something from the car, I remembered something I’d been wanting to do: photograph the spiderwebs in the yard. I don’t know why they’re here, and it makes me jumpy when I walk through the driveway, but spiderwebs are all. over. the. yard. right now. Each one of them a home for another’s relative.

(almost) crisp autumn days
I may be not-so-silently urging fall on its way, but with a long, difficult LA summer of over 90 degree days, I’ll take an unseasonably warm Seattle September, no question. Hours after I arrived, I was off foraging for ferns and pine needles and golden leaves. There was no waiting for fall, knowing it didn’t quite arrive on September 23rd. There was finding pieces of it in the (almost) crisp air and on the cool ground. [Read more…] about (almost) crisp autumn days
endless LA summer + recent style
I came across HeyGirlMarket back in June and thought their jewelry + accessories were so fun I did a little roundup here on the blog. Their bright colors and beadwork were too perfect for summer. Lucky for me, it’s summer basically all the time, so when I got a chance to try one of their bracelets, it wasn’t hard to wear it out, even in late September. And if it’s actual fall where you live, a bracelet like this would be perfect for a neutrals-only outfit, even if it’s not so sunny.
