A small, good space for crafts

September 5, 2013 by Angela

Our small one-bedroom apartment doesn’t quite allow a separate craft room, nor a place to write (I normally bring my notebook or laptop out here instead). At first I was focused on gathering really pretty shelving to sneakily store my yarn away because I knew it would have to go in the main room. Eventually, not wanting to pay hundreds of dollars or search through disappointing Los Angeles thrift shops for months until I found the perfect solution, I settled on the practical: cheap Target + Ikea goods.

To spice things up a bit I added vintage book pages to the back of the main shelf, a bit of washi tape around the top border, and put mismatched boxes throughout.

Even though the shelf itself is pretty narrow, it will easily store large stacks of boxes.

I put pens over here as opposed to the drawers by my desk, which are already full with paint, stamp, and other craft supplies. It’s a little scattered but it’s not like I have to go far.

Here’s the magnet board above my desk.

One of my only complaints about our cute apartment is the lack of natural light. We only get a yellowy flood of light in the main room around seven a.m. when the sun is rising and even then it’s just enough to wash out a little corner of the room – so pictures like this aren’t so light and beautiful.

I really wanted a separate room for all my things at first – but with moving that definitely wasn’t going to happen, and I realized in the end that I don’t need it at all.

Illuminance Jewelry Shop

August 28, 2013 by Angela

I planned to save this post for later on in the week but yesterday was one of those days where I didn’t feel particularly inspired to write about my own work – so I present to you the lovely (and complete, unlike mine!) art of someone else… Illuminance Jewelry on Etsy!
You’ll never see me wearing rings or bracelets… I just can’t seem to get through the day without messing with them + ultimately taking them off and never wearing again. But these rings are so unique and delicate, that I found myself rethinking that necklace only policy I take on when shopping…

Su from Illuminance only sells organic + handformed jewelry. I think this is so amazing because even on Etsy it is sometimes hard to tell just how handmade something is. Given her success on Etsy alone (2200+ sales!), it is a really impressive thing to see.

Another perk of this gorgeous shop is that 15% of all of the proceeds go through Compassion International to help those in need.

This shop also features necklaces (this is my favorite) and over 75 other unique pieces.

Have you seen Illuminance Jewelry before?

New at East Magnolia Vintage

August 20, 2013 by Angela

I’ve been working on new photos for the shop, taken on my floral wallpaper, as well as listing new items. I must say my Etsy shops have been almost nonexistent this summer! But with fall being my favorite season, I’m inspired to bring new fashion + accessories to my little boutiques.
The pictures above are just a sneak peek of the things you’ll see in E. Magnolia Vintage this autumn, but there is much more on the way! 🙂

Etsy front page feature

May 14, 2013 by Angela

Last week my crochet ear warmer headband popped up on the front page of Etsy! If you’re a seller, you know how thrilling it is to see your items in a treasury, and more so if it is picked for the front page! I was happy to be in the company of great sellers. (Please excuse my awful screen shot–in my excitement I forgot what to do!) Marieken from Invisible Crown curated this and thanks to a different seller’s twitter shout out I was able to see it live. I love that the front pages are based on a community effort of discovery; if I had one thing to say to Etsy it would be: never do away with treasuries. My favorite piece here is the iceberg print. What’s yours?
In other news, I saw The Great Gatsby! Have you seen it yet?! Fitzgerald is my favorite author–a love that came long after my required reading of Gatsby in high school and one that was cultivated in college with summers spent sipping iced coffee at the park with Gatsby and Tender is the Night and a collection of short stories in hand and a highlighter at my side for those extra-captivating pieces of prose.
The film didn’t disappoint: how could it with Leonardo cast as Gatsby? Without giving anything away: I was impressed by its alliance to the story, its liberal interpretation of Fitzgerald’s lavish party descriptions, and beautiful visuals. The scene with Gatsby and all the shirts was almost too ideal. Yes, the narration seemed forced at times–but I wouldn’t give it up and risk lacking piece of the original text–and it was quite long–but what could have been cut?

Photographer Jesy Almaguer

May 3, 2013 by Angela

I’m not quite sure how I happened across Jesy Almaguer’s portfolio website, but once I clicked I stayed awhile. Jesy’s main focus has been portraits of children, but has since moved to editorials, fashion shoots, and one pretty collection called “Beautiful & Ordinary”.

Some of her photos are breathtakingly creative and beautiful such as this collection and some are just plain fun. I love the color and composition at play and I knew I wanted to share her work with everyone! The best part about Jesy’s website is that she has plenty of work to look at–I can see the unique styling in each series. Take a look at her work here, and report back with your favorite collection.
This week I read Let The Great World Spin -definitely a captivating read, started the novel Luminarium and caught up on my favorite blog. Recommended reading: recent posts by Here & Now and A Beautiful Mess’s DIY tables.
Pinned too many photos from the above artist and went on a California dreamin’ binge with inspiration from SF and beautiful adventures.
Loved this blogger’s take on yellow for spring.
What did you love this week? I also loved that I am going to be away enjoying the sunshine for the weekend! It’s supposed to be in the 80s – which seems totally crazy!
